Air Jordan IV

The Air Jordan IV shoe was first released in 1989, designed once again by Tinker Hatfield. It became the first Jordan shoe released on the global market, with some exceptions. The Air Jordan IV cushioning sole and design helped to make the shoe an international bestseller.

Spike Lee, the director/actor who helped in the ad campaign for the Air Jordan III, created the famous Can/Can't TV commercial. Lee also featured the Air Jordan IV in his movie Do The Right Thing in a scene where the character "Buggin Out" (played by Giancarlo Esposito) angrily confronts a Caucasian bicyclist who accidentally bumps into him and scuffs his Air Jordan IVs shoes. After the confrontation, Buggin Out promptly places his shoe on a fire hydrant and cleans it with a toothbrush.

The shoe was retroed in 1999 in a white/black colorway and a black/cement colorway, and stores were sold out of Air Jordan IV within hours of release. However, when Nike released the first Retro+ model of the Air Jordan IV, many fans of the shoe claimed that the company had "destroyed a classic" by removing the nets on the shoe along with making some other subtle changes. One example being "NIKE AIR" logo featured on the back of the shoe being replaced with the Jumpman logo.

In 2006, Nike released several variations of the Air Jordan IV, including "Mars Blackmons" ("Red" IV's with Spike Lee's alter ego on the heel), "Military Blues", and the $500 "Thunder and Lightning" package. Also released the Mist blue color and all white and all black.

These particular variations of the shoe also takes part in the inspiration of the Air Jordan Spiz'ike (the shoe's side-lace strap).

The Air Jordan 4 took the world by storm in 1989. Along with a career season came a career sneaker.

Tinker Hatfield once again designed this shoe. The Air Jordan 4 featured many new design concepts. First, the straps on the side for increased ankle support. It was nearly impossible for MJ to roll his ankle in these shoes. The Air Jordan 4 again featured the air sole heel for dded cushioning and a full length midsole. In the White/Black-Cement, the shoe featured a unique texturing nicknamed “Cookies & Cream” for its striking resemblance. The Air Jordan 4 was another masterpiece to the Jordan lineup.

Mike flies to new heights

While wearing the Air Jordan 4, Michael Jordan reached new points in his career. Taking home another scoring title with 32.5 points per game, Jordan also appeared in the All-Star Game, First Team NBA, and All-Defense. This year was arguably Jordan’s best year despite no championship.

It was in the Air Jordan 4’s that Jordan made “the shot” which was a series winning shot at the buzzer to advance the Bulls to the next round in a do or die situation.

Spike likes Mike

Nike continued the Jordan 4 commercials with Mars Blackmon (Spike Lee) and created the famous Can/Can’t TV commercial. Spike Lee really liked these shoes personally and gave them some extra promotion in his movie Do The Right Thing.

A classic scene for all AJ fans is when one of the persons in the movie gets his brand new AJ IV’s scuffed by a bicycle rider and flips out about it, places his shoe upon a fire-hydrant and cleans it with a toothbrush. Rent the movie today if you haven’t it!

Retros get their big break

Unlike the first series of retro Jordans in the mid-90s, the retro Jordans were an incredible success starting with the Retro Air Jordan 4 in 1999. When the Air Jordan 4’s were retro’d 1999 in white/black and black/cement grey it was crazy. Stores sold out after a few hours and everyone seemed to want a pair. As you can see a totally different approach to when the Air Jordan 1, Air Jordan 2 and Air Jordan 3 were first retroed.

Nike, or Jordan Brand, realized that this was a golden opportunity to cash in so they started releasing so called Retro+ models. An online exclusive created 2 days of chaos across the US as thousands of Jordan heads tried to logon to Nike’s website to buy the limited sneakers.

The Jordan 4 is one of the most coveted Air Jordans to release and of all retro Jordans, the Black/Red pair of the Air Jordan 4 is sitting high on many grail’s lists. The first time that Nike tried releasing retro Jordans in 1994, the campaign was far from successful, but when the Air Jordan 4 came back in 1999, it couldn’t have been better received. Retro fever was on!

In 2008, Jordan Brand released Countdown Packages that included this colorway along with a Jordan 19. Though the colorway was the same as this pair, the shape was different as well as missing the Nike Air logo on the back (replaced with a Jumpman). To many Jordan enthusiasts it isn’t the same making this version of the Jordan 4 retro worth even more.

The White/Black Jordan 4 was nicknamed the “Cookies and Cream” because of the speckled pattern on the back, midsole, and TPU “wings”. This pattern followed the unmistakable elephant print present on the Air Jordan 3 from the year’s prior Air Jordans. This colorway of the Air Jordan 4 received a cameo in the Spike Lee movie Do The Right Thing with Buggin Out’s kicks were scuffed by a bike tire.

Many hoped to see this colorway return again in the 2008 Countdown Package, but fans of the shoes will have to hunt for the retro pair that is nearly 10 years old.

This colorway of the Air Jordan 4+ quickly earned the nickname “Bling Bling” thanks to its all white color and chrome lace loops. Maybe extra thanks could be given to the popular song that released only a few months before the shoes did, but either way, these did not have a hard time selling at retailers when they arrived in the spring of 2000. Not officially a pair of “Pure Money” Air Jordans, many heads do argue these to be the first.

The “Classic Green” Air Jordan 4 will not go down in history as one of the best retro Air Jordans, but at the time of its release many couldn’t pass on the opportunity to purchase a pair of Air Jordan 4’s. Like the Jordan 4+ retros from 2000, the shoes had a leather tab on the heel and wings, but this time around Jordan Brand added the netting to the sides and tongues.

The “Cool Grey” Air Jordan 4 was the first “Cool Grey” colorway of retro Air Jordans to incorporate a color other than grey, white, or black. The first of this colorway was the “Cool Grey” Jordan XI that released in 2001 and was welcomed by complete mayhem at malls across the US. Following the Jordan 11, the Jordan 9 received the same treatment of colors, but the reaction was not quite as keen. The Jordan 4 Cool Greys were well received by the public and sold without issues at retailers thanks in large part to the colorway as well as the fact that these were only the second Air Jordan 4 to release in four years.

Air Jordan 4 Black/Black-Cool Grey

Like the White/Black Jordan 4, this pair features the “Cookies and Cream” pattern speckled across the midsole and lace loops, but unlike the other Jordan 4+’s, the shoe have TPU “wings” on the side. These retro Air Jordans still feature the Jumpman on the back instead of the more desireable Nike Air. The Jordan 4+ shoes were never quite as popular as the true Jordan 4’s but do fetch some healthy prices if still in deadstock condition.
